A Hero Among Us: Colonel Jay R. Vargas, USMC (Ret.), Medal of Honor Recipient, Visits Crownair Aviation
On a vibrant Friday afternoon at Crownair Aviation, located at the heart of Montgomery-Gibbs Executive Airport in San Diego, California, we had the extraordinary privilege of hosting a true American hero: Colonel Vargas, USMC (Ret.), a recipient of the Medal of Honor, our nation’s highest military honor. The occasion was our FlexAir Event – Flight Deck Friday, a gathering that took place at The Hangars by Crownair Aviation and brought together aviation enthusiasts, young pilots, and veterans for an inspiring evening of camaraderie, shared stories, and a rare encounter with a living legend.
A Rare Encounter in a City of Heroes
Did you know that the odds of meeting one of the nation’s 61 living Medal of Honor recipients are approximately 1 in 5.4 million? That’s a staggering 0.0000185% chance of crossing paths with someone who has demonstrated extraordinary valor in the face of unimaginable adversity. San Diego is uniquely honored to be home to three of these remarkable individuals: John Baca (U.S. Army), Robert Modrzejewski (USMC), and Jay R. Vargas (USMC). With 10 of the living recipients in their late 80s, the opportunity to meet a hero like Colonel Vargas is increasingly rare and deeply meaningful. On this special day, Crownair Aviation became a nexus for such a moment, as Colonel Vargas graced our event with his presence, leaving an indelible mark on everyone in attendance.
The Hero: Colonel Jay R. Vargas
Colonel Jay R. Vargas, born on July 29, 1938, in Winslow, Arizona, is a name synonymous with courage, leadership, and selflessness. His heroic actions during the Vietnam War, specifically from April 30 to May 2, 1968, during the Battle of Đông Hà, earned him the Medal of Honor, presented by President Richard M. Nixon in 1970. As a captain leading Company G, 2nd Battalion, 4th Marines, 9th Marine Amphibious Brigade, Vargas displayed unparalleled bravery in the face of relentless enemy fire.
During the intense three-day battle, Vargas, despite being wounded multiple times, led his unit with extraordinary resolve. On April 30, 1968, he maneuvered his company under heavy mortar and artillery fire to relieve pressure on a pinned-down friendly unit, personally eliminating enemy combatants and securing critical positions. On May 1, wounded again, he refused medical evacuation, choosing instead to remain with his Marines, directing air strikes and coordinating defensive efforts. By May 2, with his company surrounded, Vargas led a daring counterattack, personally carrying wounded Marines to safety while under fire, ensuring the survival of his unit. His citation reads, in part:
“For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty… Major Vargas’s valiant leadership, unswerving devotion to duty, and inspiring courage under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the U.S. Naval Service.”
Vargas’s military career spanned over three decades, including service in the Korean War and multiple tours in Vietnam. He retired as a colonel in 1992, leaving behind a legacy of service that continues to inspire generations. Beyond his Medal of Honor, Vargas’s decorations include the Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat “V,” Purple Heart with four gold stars, and numerous other commendations, reflecting a lifetime of sacrifice and dedication.
A Memorable Visit at Flight Deck Friday
The GoFlexAir Event – Flight Deck Friday – was designed to foster a sense of community among pilots, veterans, and aviation enthusiasts. The event featured aircraft displays, networking opportunities, and discussions about the future of aviation. However, the highlight of the evening was undoubtedly Colonel Vargas’s presence. His visit was not merely a ceremonial appearance; it was a heartfelt interaction that resonated deeply with everyone, particularly the young pilots and veterans in attendance.
Colonel Vargas took the time to engage with several young pilots, including two Marines and one Air Force member, who are either currently serving or transitioning out of military service. As well as Ivor Shier, Founder of Corporate Helicopters, who ended up giving him a personal visit of his headquarters, right around the corner. His words carried the weight of experience, offering wisdom and encouragement to those who represent the next generation of aviators and service members. Members of the Air National Guard also approached to shake his hand right, they rushed to The Hangars after a mission, a gesture that symbolized the deep respect and admiration they held for this decorated hero.
Vargas shared stories from his time in service, recounting moments of camaraderie, sacrifice, and resilience. His humility was palpable, as he spoke not of his own heroism but of the Marines he led and the collective strength of those who serve. For the young pilots, many of whom are at the cusp of their careers, his presence was a powerful reminder of the values of duty, honor, and perseverance.
